Page Report

This shows your markup, normalised to HTML 4. Bogus or deprecated markup is highlighted. If you selected accessibility testing, markup that fails accessibility tests is highlighted with small icons indicating the level at which they fail. These are warnings; while some of them indicate definite errors, others just indicate you should check manually. The level of certainty of the warning is indicated by a cross through the icon: the more red the cross, the more certain the diagnosis.

You can get diagnostic information by moving the mouse over any of the elements or attributes, or the accessibility icons. The icons are also direct links to the guidelines you may have violated.

If your equipment doesn't support the presentational features in this report, please select an alternative presentation from the preceding Form.

SVG Accessibility

July 24th 2002 @ 13:52

About a week ago, I decided that SVG was less accessible than Flash, neither are particularly accessible of course, but I held off on actually saying it in public, 'cos it's not really the done thing, but after some discussions on the
< WCAG-AAA
/Medium a href="http://groups.yahoo.com/group/svg-developers/message/19323" > svg-devlopers list
I let the cat out the bag, it has not surprisingly
< WCAG-AAA
/Medium a href="http://groups.yahoo.com/group/svg-developers/message/19338" > got some peoples backs up
< WCAG-AAA
/Medium a> .

So as suggested by
< WCAG-AAA
/Medium a href="http://www.w3.org/People/chris/" > Chris
, I tried to address the deficiencies in my
< WCAG-AAA
/Medium a href="/pics/" > picture gallery
and therefore make it more
< WCAG-AAA
/Medium a href="pics/access.1" > accessible
. I'm pretty happy with the result, some longdescs are the only other things I think I really need, but they are time consuming to create.

Mozilla Accepts...

July 22rd 2002 @ 10:43

I got an email today about the
< WCAG-AAA
/Medium a href="/faq/" > javascript FAQ
, they were requesting I change the link to the
< WCAG-AAA
/Medium a href="http://www.w3.org/DOM/faq" > DOM FAQ
because when accessed with Mozilla it returns an XSL stylesheet due to content-negotiation. This demonstrates 2 problems, firstly that the W3 DOM are pretty silly serving up an XSL file as a representation of the FAQ.

More importantly though it shows up a serious bug in Mozilla in prefering random XML representation over a text/html one. Mozilla appears to send headers which include "text/xml,application/xml,application/xhtml+xml,text/html;q=0.9", this says give me xml over text/html (the text/html has a lower q value.). The problem here is that most content served with an XML content type is not readable by humans so Mozilla having a preference for XML does nothing to help its users.
< WCAG-AAA
/Medium a href="http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=153685" > The Mozilla bug about www-DOM FAQ page
, has this as a Tech-Evangelism bug, rather than a browser one.

Running...

A more accessible jigsaw

(July 18th 2002 @ 21:13)

The
< WCAG-AAA
/Medium a href="http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL/" > web accessibility folks
had a
< WCAG-AAA
/Medium a href="http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL/2002/07/f2f-minutes.html" > face2face in Linz
, and they looked at a couple of my SVG demos to see if they could be made accessible. The
< WCAG-AAA
/Medium a href="/2002/4/jigsaw.svg" > jigsaw puzzle
is the one where I think there's at least a chance - so I had a go at creating a
< WCAG-AAA
/Medium a href="/2002/7/jigsaw-access.svg" > more accessible jigsaw
. It's not accessible, but it's better.

Yahoo's filtering

(July 18th 2002 @ 21:13)

Okay, so I'm reading
< WCAG-AAA
/Medium a href="http://www.codestore.net/" > codestore
< WCAG-AA
/Low small> (no idea why, I don't have anything to do with domino, but he does say some stuff about SVG.)
and I found this
< WCAG-AAA
/Medium a href="http://www.newscientist.com/news/news.jsp?id=ns99992546" > new scientist report on yahoo's filtering
. It's interesting that it creates new words, but what's worrying is how simplistic the security is, they reportedly filter "eval" to "review", which suggests that eval is a problem. There's lots of ways to include malicious script, and I'd suggest you dump yahoo into a security zone where script is disabled until they can prove their filters are up to scratch.

Looking around...

(July 18th 2002 @ 11:37)

So I look around at other peoples blogs for inspiration on what blogging software needs (well I had to develop my own blogging software, you're not "geek" unless you do surely?) and so I visit
< WCAG-AAA
/Medium a href="http://www.scottandrew.com/weblog/000400" > Scott Andrew's Blog.
where I learn a few things about what to include in a Blog. I also find though that he has things like this

*

- so here's a well respected
"DHTML guru"
that adds script which harms
< WCAG-AAA
/Medium a href="http://www.w3.org/WAI/" > accessibility
. If javascript is disabled the link goes to the top the page and the information is completely hidden, accessibility is easy, but it takes some thought.
< WCAG-AA
/Low small> (I'll overlook the fact that he shouldn't be serving up the page as text/html. at all.)

Hmm.. anyone noticed how much

In the beginning...

(July 18th 2002 @ 10:39)

Well, I'm getting old, my memory's going, so I thought I would try and find out if a blog will do as an artificial memory. The advantage of this experiment is it will definately be successful - if I blog it, I'll remember and if I don't I won't remember that I forgot.
